MECHANISM

A Painting Installation in 3D Stereo

Standing Version

Wall Version

Mechanism, full Painting. Oil on acrylic stained canvas. 5’ x 10’.

Mechanism is an installation concerned with the interdependence of people, technology and culture.

I believe that people, technology, and culture are inseparably intertwined, to the degree that they have become an organism with a mind of its own, with a purpose beyond our control or understanding. While I consider this as a serious issue, I prefer to present it in a lighthearted, entertaining way. Humor allows us to be more resilient.

In each of the seven viewer boxes people are able see a different view of the painting in 3D stereo.

3D Stereo is a common term for stereoscopic. It is visual stereo, as opposed to stereophonic, which is audio.  The word stereo is borrowed from Greek, where it means ‘solid’.  When we look at the world our eyes send two pictures to our brains. Our brains then create depth.  In stereo art a different image is presented to each eye and, as long as the images are created correctly, we perceive depth.

The viewer boxes can either be mounted on a sculptural rack that allows the viewer to adjust the height.  The lowest height is ADA accessible.  Or they can be mounted on the wall which is non-adjustable but requires less space.

The installation debuted in a gallery of the NW Marine Art Works complex, in connection with our Open Studios in July of 2023.
